Description:

Once again, the Hochvogel plays a central role today. From Hinterhornbach we ascend on the side where there once was a demanding trail directly to the summit. However, as the mountain has increasingly fractured in recent years and a landslide is likely, this route is no longer an option. Instead, we initially hike a bit less challenging over the Fuchsensattel to the northern side of the impressive rock giant and head towards the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus. The ascent below the Kalter Winkel up and over a rocky ridge to the Balkenscharte demands our full concentration before we spot our familiar hut. However, today it does not mark our stage destination — we reach that about two hours later down in the valley at the Giebelhaus. From there, a bus takes us to Hinterstein — the destination of today’s stage. Note: the last bus from Giebelhaus to Hinterstein runs shortly after 6 p.m. in the summer months — be sure to plan your time accordingly!

Those interested and in good physical shape can plan a detour to the Hochvogel at Kalter Winkel (round trip about 3–4 hours). There is often a snowfield there far into August, and a long rope helps through the steepest section. For the return from Hochvogel to Prinz-Luitpold-Haus, the route via Kreuzspitze (via ferrata, don’t forget your via ferrata set) is also recommended.
