Regulations and Code of Conduct

Ski Touring in the Ski Resort

Ski touring on the slopes? OK – but please always bear in mind: as a ski tourer, you are a guest in the ski resort!

The following rule generally applies in the Tannheimer Tal cable car ski resorts:
Ski touring at the edge of the slopes whilst the slopes are open is tolerated!

We urge all ski tourers to adhere to the slope rules for ski tourers in order to avoid collisions with skiers.

  • Outside of ski operating hours (8.00 am to 4.30 pm), the slopes are closed as snow groomers fitted with winches are in operation.
  • On touring evenings, the hours are from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm. The slope is closed whilst the snow groomers are being driven up.

Ski tourers on ski slopes

  • The slope operator may prohibit the use of the slope or parts thereof after closing time. However, they are not obliged to monitor compliance with such a prohibition.
  • A skier ascending the slope on skins is using the slope contrary to its primary purpose as a downhill run (see FIS Rule 7 and POE § 12).

He is therefore obliged to choose his route up the slope in such a way that he does not endanger skiers coming down and only hinders them to the extent that is unavoidable.

He has therefore

  • As a general rule, choose the ascent route at the edge of the slope.
  • In any case, use the edge of the slope. Walking side by side must be strictly avoided.
  • Crossing the piste should be avoided at all costs in areas with poor visibility and, in any case, should be carried out as quickly as possible.
  • If several people ascending the piste are crossing it, they must keep a sufficient distance from one another so as not to obstruct skiers descending the piste.

If the new operator has no contractual relationship with the ski slope operator, the latter is subject only to the obligations arising from their status as operator.

• Depending on the gradient and width of the slope, those ascending will not always be able to avoid crossing it. However, in order to minimise the risk of collision, they should avoid blind spots wherever possible and under no circumstances linger unnecessarily in such areas.

• As a group of skiers ascending the slope, who maintain the close proximity to one another that is customary when ascending, may obstruct those descending and thereby compromise the primary purpose of the run, ascending skiers are required to maintain a distance from one another that allows for unobstructed descent on the run.

• The same rules apply to ski tourers descending on the piste as to other skiers and snowboarders using the piste, regardless of the route they took to reach the top. Consequently, the piste closure also applies to them, particularly after the piste has closed.

• A ski tourer may use an open piste for the ascent, provided the piste operator has not prohibited such use. A ski tourer ascending the piste does not constitute an atypical hazard. They must comply with the FIS rules, in particular Rules 6 and 7, as well as the POE rules.

The ban on using a closed piste also applies to ski tourers ascending the slope.
