Over the Bildstöckle

This challenging route starts from the Sonthofen ice rink via Strausbergstraße to Binswangen. There you cross the B 308 and then the Ostrach river, reaching the Entschenburgweg and then the Fluhensteinweg, which climbs steeply to the right into the district of Staig. You pass through it straight ahead and soon continue uphill to Walten. Following Bergstraße, you shortly reach the district of Unterried and, after another kilometer uphill, Breiten. From then on, the road continues as a toll road climbing in large curves past the Winsch-Glick-Alpe, which often offers thirsty athletes some drinks in its outdoor fridge. A few hundred meters further uphill, the Wick Chapel has guarded this scenic spot for many decades. A short pause to enjoy the view, then pedaling continues. 400 meters of elevation over nearly 5 kilometers make themselves felt in some calves. However, the breathtaking panoramic view at the so-called "Bildstöckle" more than compensates for the effort. Hooray, the maximum height of 1,353 meters above sea level is now nearly reached.

The forest path then continues almost level before descending past the Tiefenbacher Waldhütte to the serviced Dreiangel hut. The descent through the "Großer Wald" is a special experience since this magnificent forest area is characterized by pristine nature and its tree population and many blueberry bushes remind one of the forests of Canada. After refreshing at the rustic Dreiangel hut, continue left via the so-called Königssträßchen along the paved road downhill. After about 400 m, keep left, briefly go uphill, and follow the signs for Winkel – Berghofer Wald. Soon after, you reach the Berghofer Wald Alpe, which also invites you for a snack with a cool drink. After a relaxed stop, you continue down the alpine path to Winkel but enjoy first the wonderful panoramic view over Sonthofen into the Allgäu Alps. From Winkel, the connecting road leads back to Sonthofen. You ride straight toward the town center, cross the B 308 again, and turn left at the next intersection into Oststraße. After about 20 meters, you turn right onto the bike path past the secondary school and so return directly to the starting point at the ice rink.

Important: Closure due to wildlife enclosure Berghofer Wald (between Bildstöckle and Dreiangel hut) from November 15 to May 15.

• Always ride at controlled speed and half sight, especially in curves, as obstacles can appear at any time!


• Be considerate of hikers and pedestrians and only overtake at walking pace!


• Be aware of the route's difficulty level and accurately assess your experience and skills as a biker! Protect your head with a helmet and check your equipment before starting each bike ride (brakes, bell, lights)!


• Respect barriers and accept that this path primarily serves agricultural and forestry use! Close the pasture gates!


• Respect nature and wildlife, do not leave the marked route, avoid riding off the open paths, and finish your bike tour before dusk. Do not leave any waste!
